FAQ: “I’m thinking about going to law school…”

I get asked a lot about law school from people who are thinking about it. Here’s what I’m telling them at this point. I assume you’ve read the usual articles about this (”talk to as many lawyers and law students as your can”), so I’ll get right to my own ideas:

Do a bit of studying for the LSAT, take a practice test, and check your results with Law School Numbers. This is a cool site where law school applicants submit their numbers anonymously along with the results of their applications at the various schools. It’ll give you an idea what your prospects for admission and scholarships are.

I like law school. Sometimes I hate it, sometimes I claim to love it. For sure, not everyone “likes” it, and I don’t think it’s necessary to. Me personally, I’ve always been very interested in the law; I’ve volunteered for legal aid, read Supreme Court opinions for fun, been a member of the ACLU, etc. But that’s definitely not necessary for law school enjoyment or success — which I can see, knowing the backgrounds of some of my classmates, who hadn’t had any previous exposure to the law and are doing great. For sure, though, if you’ve been long interested in the law, that’s a good positive indication. Hmm! I just remembered that the book, How to Get Into Law School by Susan Estrich, was really helpful and interesting on this topic.

The best law school podcast website is at the Lewis & Clark law library. I didn’t make this up — somebody or another actually decided that. I forget who, at the moment. At any rate, go to this site and you can listen to & watch classes, presentations and lawyer career panels. While you’re doing that, ask yourself if you’re having fun. If so, law school might be for you!
